They Conquered!

Winter Special Olympics practices culminated in exciting Regional and State competitions, with many blue ribbons earned. Events included 1k and 10K Nordic races and alpine skiing. Our thanks to Adaptive Sports Center in Crested Butte for facilitating the trips!

Winter Special Olympics Athletes

Special Olympics gives clients the opportunity to learn or perfect new skills, be challenged to push themselves physically, compete with others of similar abilities, be recognized for their accomplishments, make friends, and socialize in a supported environment.  Your support makes Special Olympics possible!

WE LOVE OUR COMMUNITY!

Western Colorado University (WCU) students, career professionals, volunteers…we appreciate ALL who offer time, effort, and, most importantly, friendship. THANK YOU!

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT

BARRON FARNELL….DANCER EXTRAORDINAIRE!

Barron Farnell

Barron has been dancing in his hometown, Crested Butte, since the age of 18, which is not very long considering how accomplished he is.  He first took dance lessons as a senior in high school and quickly found his niche, though he’s no stranger to the stage, having been involved with singing and theater in his early years.  He recounts that the best experience of his life was senior prom, where he stole everyone’s date because he knew how to dance.  “Everyone loves a man who can dance,” he quips.  Barron has been dancing with the Crested Butte Dance Company for the last 13 years, teaches Zumba, and is hopeful that an audition for a Netflix show called “Love on the Spectrum” will help launch him into a career in entertainment.  Meanwhile, keep inspiring us all, Barron.  You rock!

DIRECTOR’S CORNER with Daniel Bruce – April 2023

HAPPY SPRING!?…OR IS IT REALLY STILL WINTER?!  Spring in the Gunnison Valley can be an interesting season between the mud, wind, snow…more snow, rain, and occasional sun.  However, it also brings warmer temps, robins, cranes, and the last days of skiing.

I’m excited to announce that Six Points will be having our Community Appreciation Picnic on Friday, June 30, 2023, beginning at Noon, on the patio at Six Points.  I hope you will all come out and have lunch with us.  Six Points is celebrating over 40 years as an organization (incorporated in 1981) and over 50 years since a group of citizens and parents volunteered their support to address the lack of services for individuals with developmental disabilities in Gunnison County.

EXCITEMENT IS IN THE AIR – SUMMER IS ALMOST HERE!  Our clients are gearing up for summer already.  There are bikes to get tuned up, triathlons and Special Olympics events to train for, summer jobs to apply for, gardens to plant, picnics to plan, and anticipation of just enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends.

YOU MAKE OUR ORGANIZATION POSSIBLE!  Thank you again for all your support!

STAY TUNED:

April – Special Olympics training continues, Western Colorado University Adaptive  PE class
May –  Regional Special Olympics Aquatics and Track & Field (May 6, 7)
June –  State Special Olympics Aquatics and Track & Field (June 9-11),

Annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic (June 30)
